Range of Health Services for Women
Total GP Care provide a range of women’s health services including, but not limited to:
- Pap smears
- Breast screening examinations
- Implantable contraception insertions (Implanon and Mirena – see below for further information)
- Pregnancy testing
- Shared Antenatal Care (see below for further information)
- Fertility Check
- STI screenings.
Implanon is a reliable form of long-acting contraception. Implanon is a small plastic rod containing the contraceptive hormone protestogen.
The rod is inserted under the skin in the upper arm using local anaesthetic. It then releases hormones slowly which provides contraception for 3 years.
Implanon is more than 99% effective at preventing conception. Some women will find that their periods stop completely, however some will experience irregular periods. At the end of 3 years, Implanon will need to be removed or replaced.
Mirena is a hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) that can provide long-term birth control (contraception). The device is a T-shaped plastic frame that's inserted into the uterus, where it releases a type of the hormone progestin.
The Mirena prevents pregnancy for up to seven years after insertion and helps with menstrual issues
If this is something that you may consider, schedule a long appointment with either Dr Eswari Byka or Dr Devi Radhika Dampanaboina. We provide this service at Total GP Care Prospect and Total GP Care Norwood.
Antenatal Shared Care
Antenatal Shared Care is where the antenatal care for pregnant women is shared between the local hospital and a local GP. Antenatal Shared Care is for women who are likely to have an uncomplicated or low risk pregnancy.
If problems do arise during your pregnancy whilst on the Antenatal Shared Care program, you may be transferred back for hospital-based specialist care at the hospital antenatal clinic.
There are many benefits of shared care for both health professionals and expecting mothers. These include:
- Providing pregnant women with flexibility, choice and continuity of care through pregnancy
- Catering for the preferences and needs of women from culturally diverse backgrounds
- Enhancing the skills of GPs caring for women during pregnancy
- Promoting communication between GPs and the participating hospitals.
If you are interested in the Antenatal Shared Care Program, please arrange a long scheduled appointment with Dr Loan Duong.
